Employment Advice

Employment issues and the legislation surrounding them are complex.

Select from the advice > employment advice sub menus for specific employment issues.

If you feel that you have been unfairly treated or subject to discrimination by your employer you will need to take action within certain time limits, otherwise you will lose any rights that you may have to appeal.

What East Lindsey Citizens Advice can do for you:

  • Help you deal with grievance and disciplinary issues.
  • Advise you of your rights under legislation and contract.
  • Advise on actions you might take if you are dismissed or threatened with dismissal.
  • Advise on your rights if you are made redundant or if you think this may happen.
  • Help you negotiate with your employer if s/he wants to change your terms and condition of service.
  • Advise on Maternity, Paternity & family rights.
  • Calculate the wages you are owed when leaving work.
  • Help you to identify and challenge any acts of discrimination in employment.
  • Help in preparing your case for the Employment Tribunal or County Court.
  • Advise on benefit entitlement, tax and National Insurance issues.

If you are experiencing difficulties regarding employment, or want information, call our Advice Line on 08444 111444 or call into one of our bureau drop in sessions.

What you should do

  • Check your statutory rights

Tell us the date you started the job and the number of hours you work each week. You will need to give us details if this has changed. Your age may be important.

Tell us whether you think the problems have anything to do with your racial origins, your gender or sexual orientation or any Trades Union activities you may have undertaken.

  • Check your contractual rights

Bring a copy of your contract of employment and/or your letter of appointment. If you cannot find it, your employer might provide a copy. Perhaps your employer has told you what your terms would be. If not, we shall need to know what arrangements the company has previously made in similar circumstances.

If you have had your contract changed or been asked to make changes to it, or if you are going through a disciplinary or grievance process, you should bring any correspondence relating to these events when seeing one of our advisors.
